Swimming: Coppell qualifies 15 for regionals
BY JUSTIN THOMAS, jthomas@acnpapers.com
District swimming and diving championships are never easy, especially when state-power Southlake Carroll is in your district.
But despite squaring off against one of the elite programs in the state, among others, Coppell still managed to qualify its fair share of competitors for the Region II Meet, which is slated for Feb. 10-11 at the LISD Aquatic Center in The Colony.
The Cowboys finished second at district behind the Dragons, while the Cowgirls placed fourth. Carroll won on the girls side as well. Last year, the Dragons and Lady Dragons finished first and second, respectively, at the state meet.
"We had a lot of fun," said Patrick Henry, Coppell coach. "It's very challenging because Southlake is so good and so deep, they usually take three of the spots and leave everyone else fighting for the rest. But it was a good challenge and we did a good job."
Coppell advanced all of its relay teams to regionals on both the boys and girls sides.
Additionally, Lauren Kuechler advanced in the 200-yard individual medley (2:11.94) and the 100 butterfly (59.03), while Luke Meyer qualified in the 50 (22.83) and 100 freestyle (49.39). Hayden Henry qualified in the 200 IM (1:55.28) and 100 breaststroke (58.95). Josh Chanin and Kristian Chanin will be headed to regionals in the 100 backstroke (57.79) and 100 butterfly (55.11), respectively, while Shannon Wheeler qualified in the 50 free (25.63). Henry set program records in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.
Including relays, Coppell will send 15 to regionals.
"We were happy with how we swam," Henry said. "We had 75 to 80 percent personal best times and I feel like we have a good chance to have a good showing at regionals."
